The Praemium Imperiale are a series of Awards made to artists who have made a major international impact in their particular field.  They are awarded annually in the categories of Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Music and Theatre/Film.  They were established in 1988 to mark the centenary of the Japan Art Association and to honour its then Imperial Patron, Prince Takamatsu who originally conceived the idea of these Awards.
Each of the five laureate receives an honorarium of 15million yen in a formal ceremony held in Tokyo in October, presided over by the current Honorary Patron, HIH Prince Hitachi, the younger brother of the Emperor Emeritus of Japan.
A companion award, Grant for Young Artists, was inaugurated in 1997.  Worth 5 million yen, it is presented annually to an  organisation that encourages the involvement of young people with the arts.
